Job Summary
As a Dental Hygienist, you will be responsible for assessing patient needs, and planning and delivering direct dental hygiene care and associated services. You will play a crucial role in our patients' health by utilizing established dental hygiene protocols and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Assessment: Conduct thorough dental assessments, including medical history review, dental and periodontal charting, oral cancer screenings, and taking vital signs.
- Direct Patient Care: Perform a variety of dental hygiene treatments such as cleanings, polishing, radiographs, sealant and fluoride applications, teeth whitening, and fabrication of appliances.
- Anesthesia Administration: Provide local anesthesia to patients as needed for dental procedures.
- Treatment Planning: Develop and implement individualized dental care plans, providing education and discharge planning for patients and their families under a dentist's supervision.
- Chair-side Assistance: Assist the dentist with special tests, complex treatments, and procedures.
- Documentation: Proficiently use dental software to document patient visits, chief complaints, educational points, and all performed procedures. Ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled.
- Emergency Response: Assist with or institute emergency measures for any adverse developments during patient treatment.
- Office Duties: Contribute to a smooth office flow by assisting with patient reception, telephone calls, triage, and preparing patient care areas.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree or a Certificate/Licensure in Dental Hygiene in the state you are working.
- Current certification to provide local anesthesia in the state you are working.
- CPR Certification is required.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations for dental outpatient services.
- Ability to formulate effective therapeutic treatment plans from dental records.
- Proficiency in performing a full range of dental hygienist procedures.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly.
- Knowledge of patient screening, charting, and medical history documentation.
Schedule and Work Environment
- Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM with a one-hour lunch break.
- Environment: You will be working in a professional dental practice. The environment can be fast-paced due to patient appointment schedules, requiring the ability to handle normal job-related anxieties effectively. The role involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, such as toxic chemicals and radiation, which require following basic safety precautions, including OSHA training for blood-borne pathogens.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Requires sitting for long periods, repetitive motion of hands and arms, and good eye-hand coordination.
- Must have close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
